Atmosphere: Italian Flair at Bärenplatz
Santa Lucia Bern is located right at Bärenplatz, in the heart of the city. From the outside, the restaurant already makes an inviting impression – spacious and open.
Upon entering, the first thing you notice is the large wood-fired oven at the entrance, manned by two pizzaiolos. It gives the restaurant a special atmosphere: you see the flames, smell the wood fire, and feel the Italian passion for pizza.
The interior is classic Italian – beautifully decorated with art on the walls. The powerful paintings by Christopher Lehmpfuhl create an interesting connection between traditional trattoria and modern gallery. There’s plenty to discover while waiting for your food.
Santa Lucia spans multiple levels – the upstairs area is also lovingly decorated and offers a quieter atmosphere than the bustling ground floor.
The Kitchen: Classic Italian Dishes
The menu is classic Italian – wood-fired pizzas, pasta, meat, and fish dishes. Parmesan is freshly grated at the table, a nice detail that underscores the service quality.
Starter: Bruschetta
The bruschetta was aromatic and smelled intensely of ripe tomatoes, good olive oil, and garlic. The bread – like sliced and lightly toasted baguette – was correct and provided a good base for the savory tomato mixture.
Carpaccio
The carpaccio was light and flavored with olive oil – tender and delicate in taste. However, a large amount of Parmigiano or Grana Padano in the center somewhat overpowered the delicate flavor of the beef. Some of it remained on the plate. With a squeeze of lemon juice, it gained additional aroma. I could skip the salt – the seasoning was already well-balanced.
Service
Friendly and visibly committed to providing guests with correct and good service. The staff was attentive and courteous without being intrusive. For a restaurant of this size and popularity, the service was impeccable.
