Atmosphere: Trendy and Welcoming
Hellys is located on Schwanengasse in Bern, opposite the Rex cinema. The entrance is unassuming, but inside you’ll find a trendy atmosphere with pleasant, rather dim lighting and round lamps on the ceiling.
At the front of Hellys is a bar area, followed by the dining area. The tables in the dining area are stylishly set.
The Kitchen: Authentic Italian Classics
Appetizers to Share
We enjoyed Fave & Cicoria – a creamy bean paste made from fava beans with leafy greens and light bitter aromas, as well as Dried Bean Vegetables with potatoes. Perfect for sharing.
Pasta: Al Dente and Creamy
The Spaghetti Cacio & Pepe were excellent – a very simple preparation, as is commonly enjoyed in Italy but hardly known in Switzerland. The sauce was creamy, with aroma of fresh pepper. The spaghetti was distinctly cooked al dente.
The Paccheri Passata & Burro with large tube pasta and a beautifully creamy sauce of tomatoes and cream was also very successful.
Main Course: Guineafowl with Dumplings
The boneless guineafowl thigh with Bohemian dumpling (a steamed bread) was a highlight. The thigh was aromatic, served with cabbage and caraway seeds as well as a flavorful jus.
Dessert: Airy Quark Soufflé
To finish, a quark soufflé in a beautiful soufflé dish that rose perfectly. Very airy-creamy consistency, lightly sweet with poppy seeds, accompanied by soft ice cream made from pistachio and Fior di Latte.
In between, we enjoyed a cheese selection.
Service
Very polite service that explained the food precisely and provided knowledgeable information about preparation and wine.
