Restaurant Süder in Bern impresses with its refined interior and sophisticated cuisine. I’ve visited Süder twice now – most recently in June 2026. A visit is well worth it!
My Latest Visit (June 2026)
Süder is located a bit outside the city centre in the Weissenstein quarter, in a beautiful old corner building with white walls and sandstone edges.
Inside, the elegant interior impresses with wood-panelled walls and a white ceiling. The tables are set with great care. The very attentive, competent service rounds off the elegant atmosphere.
This time I enjoyed the lovely terrace with chestnut trees and umbrellas – a real summer highlight.
The small menu allows the kitchen to cook fresh. Particularly noteworthy is the lunch menu at very affordable prices (CHF 20–25). I chose the Swiss meat patties (Hacktätschli) with mushroom cream sauce and Fregola Sarda pasta, preceded by a small salad.
The salad was a small green salad with a creamy French dressing and crusty bread. The meat patties were nicely browned with a crispy crust and medium-rare inside – juicy and not dry. The mushroom cream sauce complemented them well, and the Fregola Sarda was mixed with Parmesan. The vegetables were cooked to perfection.
One drawback: the salt level was noticeably too high – both on my patties and on my companion’s Bratkartoffeln. It may be because I eat less salt at home, but it was striking. I also got to try my companion’s tartare: flavourful, piquant, and well-seasoned.
For dessert, I treated myself to a scoop of tonka bean ice cream with cream. The ice cream had a very creamy consistency with a subtle tonka bean aroma. Interestingly, the cream wasn’t airy whipped cream but had a noticeably denser texture – a mild and pleasant dessert.
The service was personal, very attentive, never intrusive – just as you’d want it. Overall, Süder is an elegant venue with fresh cuisine, very good service, and a refined atmosphere. Price-wise, Süder is moderate at lunch and rather expensive in the evening.
First Visit (December 2024)
On my first visit, I had the tartare as a starter, which was very well prepared and seasoned, served with butter and toast. For the main course, I ordered veal strips with wild mushroom sauce and crispy rösti – the pieces of meat were nicely sized, and everything tasted impeccable. A lovely cheese plate with fruit bread and a scoop of tonka bean ice cream rounded off the meal. We also sampled various wines, and I was particularly impressed by the value for money of the Bordeaux and Bolgheri.
