Atmosphere: Tradition right at the Zytglogge
The Harmonie Bern is located directly at the Zytglogge – one of the best spots in Bern’s Old Town. Unassuming from the outside, but step inside and you’ll find an elegant, traditional Swiss restaurant.
The clientele is rather refined and mature, the atmosphere shaped by the house’s long history. This is where politicians, regulars, and connoisseurs of traditional Swiss cuisine meet.
The Kitchen: Traditional Swiss Home Cooking
The Harmonie is one of the few restaurants in Bern that still serves proper traditional Swiss cuisine – including Metzgete, a multi-course menu featuring various parts of the pig reminiscent of traditional slaughter season.
Starter: Pea Soup with Ham Hock
The pea soup with ham hock is served in a small glass. It’s aromatic with the typical flavor of dried yellow peas, salty and rather thick – a classic start to traditional cuisine.
Main Courses: Metzgete Variety
The bratwurst with potato salad is a small pork bratwurst with fresh, refreshing potato salad – simple but perfectly prepared.
Adrio – pork sausage meat in caul fat on leek vegetables, napped with a dark sauce. A traditional dish rarely found on menus today.
Blood and liver sausage with Hörnli pasta and cooked apple slices – fresh sausages with Hörnli pasta and a savory onion sauce. The combination of hearty sausages and sweet apple slices is masterful.
Brägu – a pork ragout with small bones in a light sauce, served with mashed potatoes. Comfort food at its finest.
Dessert: Meringue with Double Cream
To finish, a meringue with double cream and a small scoop of vanilla ice cream – a dessert that’s becoming increasingly rare in Bern’s restaurants. The light, crispy meringue with creamy double cream is a true traditional treat.
Service
The service is very friendly and accommodating. The kitchen took a bit longer with the multi-course menu, but the server then stepped up and rounded off the evening perfectly. Patient, charming, and attentive.
