Atmosphere: Simple Elegance in the Old Town
Commerce Bern is located on Gerechtigkeitsgasse in the heart of Bern’s Old Town. From the outside, it’s very unassuming – only an oval sign shows the way.
Upon entering through the swing doors, you first step into a niche that serves as a cloakroom. Directly behind it, the restaurant opens up. Simple, yet it exudes elegance: plain tables with white tablecloths, a timeless interior.
Commerce is usually very well attended – a reservation is essential. The atmosphere is correspondingly lively. The clientele is mixed, the mood pleasant.
The Kitchen: Authentic Spanish Classics
The menu is Spanish-inspired – the choice was clear for me: paella. Since it takes a while to prepare, we ordered a small tapas plate beforehand.
Starter: Tapas Plate
The tapas plate came with chorizo, Jamón Serrano, some cheese, and a few olives – just the right thing before the paella. Fresh bread was served alongside.
Main Course: Paella from the Cast-Iron Pan
The waiter served the paella in a large cast-iron pan. It featured a small langoustine, king prawns, mussels, chicken, pork, and a sausage. The paella had plenty of liquid and looked very juicy.
The flavor base was the rice, which had more of a tomato aroma – little to no saffron. The individual flavors of the seafood and various meats complemented each other. A carefully prepared paella with high-quality ingredients.
Service
Friendly and personal – the service staff welcomed us warmly and was attentive throughout the entire visit. Particularly nice: when saying goodbye, the waiter addressed us by name (picked up from our conversation). It gave the evening a very personal touch.
