Chlyne Hecht – meaning “Little Pike” – is a true Bernese neighbourhood pub, hidden in a green courtyard in the heart of the Länggasse quarter. It’s not a fine dining restaurant, but a rustic little pub with character, personal service, and a speciality that’s especially popular before Christmas: fondue chinoise.
If you’re looking for a glamorous venue with Michelin-star cuisine, you’re in the wrong place. But if you want to experience an authentic, unpretentious Bernese restaurant run by a warm-hearted couple, Chlyne Hecht is exactly right.
Atmosphere: Rustic Bernese Neighbourhood Pub
Chlyne Hecht isn’t on the main street. You have to know it’s there to find it. There’s no big sign and it’s somewhat tucked away – a green courtyard sits next to the entrance. Inside you’ll find tiled floors, wooden chairs, and tables with stone tops. The decor is proudly Bernese – there’s even a BSC Young Boys jersey on the wall.
The atmosphere is rustic, relaxed, and authentic. People come for a beer, chat with the owners, and enjoy the easy-going vibe. Exactly what you’d expect from a true neighbourhood pub.
Fondue Chinoise – The Speciality
We came for the fondue chinoise. It started with a green salad with French dressing – fresh, simple, well executed. The dressing was flavourful, the salad crisp.
Then the spirit burner arrived, along with a small pot of hot broth. The centrepiece: a generous platter of horse and beef. Three homemade sauces accompanied it – curry, bourgogne, garlic – all made with care.
The meat was tender, the portion more than generous. On the side came pommes frites with herbs and plain – freshly made, though a touch too salty. The three sauces were a highlight, especially the garlic one.
Service: Personal and Authentic
The couple running Chlyne Hecht is genuinely Bernese. The service is friendly, personal, and authentic – just what you’d expect in a neighbourhood pub. You feel welcome, the atmosphere is warm without being intrusive.
Prices: More than Fair
CHF 42 for a fondue chinoise with this much meat, homemade sauces, and pommes is more than fair. You’ll hardly find a comparable experience at this price in Bern.
Verdict
Chlyne Hecht isn’t a restaurant for a glamorous night out. It’s a true Bernese neighbourhood pub – for people who want to enjoy an authentic fondue chinoise, don’t have the equipment at home, and want to experience a real Bernese pub. A hidden gem in Länggasse.
